An invitation to re-member Sundays as whole and holy time, re-visiting local sacred spaces and returning to the community of all beings through walking out into nature for elemental celebration, sinking into deep silence and opening to the spirit of the wild…

When do you feel most alive? When are you most open and connected with a deeper sense of being? When do you fall in love with life and want to turn towards the world with hope and care?

Perhaps, like us, your sacred ground is the earth under your feet… your sacred spaces are cathedrals of trees with branches filled with wind and rain, sunlight or stars… your baptismal pools are filled with deep brown river water or the wild and salty sea. Perhaps, like us, you yearn to share this… for spiritual community, for authentic meeting and deep silence with people and with all beings. So, welcome to wild church!

Like a river, we are an open, fluid and creative community who gather together primarily around the practice of pilgrimage. For the last ten years we have been quietly walking along the River Dart, her tributaries and watershed. We warmly invite you to join the journey…

UPCOMING EVENTS

For the most ‘up to date’ details sign up for our newsletter, join our fb community or see our new Diary page for an overview of all dates for Spring & Summer Term 2024. To get a feel for who we are & what we do, and to see photos and stories of previous gatherings, visit our journals: for Wild Church here and Wild Monastery here.

Our WILD MONASTICS group continues with meditative Zoom gatherings on the second and fourth Wednesday on each month from January 2024. Each term we deepen our exploration of ‘heart prayer & holy days’ and ‘wild scripture’ – more details here. If you are interested to join our committed community of inter-spiritual explorers, contact Sam to join our email list & receive Zoom links.

Our WILD CHURCH pilgrimages continue upstream on our signature, sea to source ‘River Dart Way‘. We gather on the afternoon of the first Sunday of the month from April to November 2024. This year we have two pilgrimage streams:

  1. Interfaith Pilgrimage. We are now entering the second stage of our route: Ancient Yews & Abbeys as we journey from Dartington to Dartmoor. For 2024 we are offering a special series of walks guided by different sacred and secular collaborators.
  2. Salmon and Saltmarsh. We return to last year’s first stage, from Dartmouth to Dartington, in collaboration with the British Pilgrimage Trust and in celebration of the Bioregional Learning Centre, who are now in the second stage of their Living Dart: The Saltmarsh Project.

See our pilgrimages page for dates, more details of all this year’s guided walks & how to book your place.

This year also sees the return of our Wild Wisdom School, which is offering a new Wild Cat(echetical) Course. This is a depth exploration of mystical Christianity through radical questioning and with a strong feminist and deep ecology emphasis. This year’s course is fully subscribed but sign up for the newsletter or contact Sam for future updates.

bringing spirit back to earth

We don’t have a fixed format for our monthly pilgrimages, as for us, an emergent style is part of the wild nature of Wild Church! In this and many other ways, we draw inspiration from the Celtic pilgrimage practice of ‘peregrinatio’ (or as Sam calls it, ‘wandering and wondering’). Collaboration is also a key element of our wild church and most events are unique co-creations with colleagues from different organisations. Yet there are recurring elements woven together in different ways for each gathering, including a simple core structure developed by Sam and inspired by Holy Communion. We always walk out into the wilds and we welcome anyone who wants to join us.

We are a pioneering inter-spiritual church, with a contemplative and mystical Christian heart, based primarily in the practice of pilgrimage. On our pilgrimages: first we gather , both outwardly and inwardly, then we engage together in silence, in a communion with our inner nature, each other and with outer nature, as we wander and wonder through the forest, along the river bank or shore. We meet whatever the weather and so are touched by the cool of the rain, the depth of gathering dark, the richness of mud, the sweetness of warm sunlight or whatever and whoever we meet along the way. We practise being quietly present with what is. We often seek out ancient or natural sacred spaces towards the end of our journey and pause to share a silent communion and reflections. Our final act is to give thanks for blessings received, to bless each other and where we are, and to seek to be a blessing as we return to home and work.

Many of our Wild Church companions also join in our regular ‘wild monastics’ contemplative meetings which meet both on Zoom with pilgrims from around the world and for ‘pop up’ in person gatherings, usually in Dartington, Devon. Individual eco spiritual counselling, mentoring and supervision, including in pioneer ministry, is also available with Rev. Sam, the founder of River Dart Wild Church, as well as short stays in her Dartington Micro Monastery.

Sometimes we are asked ‘why Wild Church?‘ Religion has sometimes been used destructively, to split matter from spirit and justify the domination of the natural world in a way that has contributed to environmental damage and the wounding of all beings, including us human creatures who depend on the web of all life for our survival. Let’s step outside of such understandings to heal the splits within ourselves and in relation to the world. As global warming increases and environmental and social crises grow, may we deepen our love, understanding and relationship with the natural world we are part of and commit together to act for the good of all. Wild Church is one of many ways of nature connection and of growing resilience as sacred activists in challenging times. Let’s celebrate the wilderness within and around us, care for our beautiful planet and support each other in making positive change. In the words of poet Mary Oliver, it is time for us to ask ourselves and each other: ‘what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?’

Our Wild Church is held within a wider social enterprise called Wild Monastery. This is a loose knit, interfaith collective of contemplative, creative and collaborative folks with a deep concern for the earth. We offer different forms of sacred gathering with a warm welcome for those of any faith or none.

We regularly come together online, through fortnightly Zoom meetings & in our fb community, and on the good earth for monthly pilgrimages and pop ups. We journey through the seasons of the spirit, in community with each other and within the changing cycles of the natural world that we are part of. Come and join us!

Breathe into the heart and breathe out kindness…

Also… please join us in spirit, in the ‘monastery of the heart’ for our daily contemplative ‘Prayer of the Heart’ initiative. People from around the world are pausing for a few breaths or a few meditative minutes ‘morning, noon and night’… Get more details and some simple guidance on the Prayer of the Heart and if you wish, feel free to get in touch to let us know you are with us…

THANK YOU to all our funders, partners, collaborators and to all the many pilgrims who have travelled with us over the last ten years.
